Club meeting, ‘Welcome to Paradise’ - Tuesday 25th January 2022.

On Tuesday 25th January 2022, Morpeth Camera Club welcomed Tony Broom from Alnwick and District
Camera Club who gave a presentation entitled ‘Welcome to Paradise’. Before joining Alnwick, Tony was
a member of Tettenhall Wood Photographic Club near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands and is also
a competition judge.

Tony opened with an Av highlighting the diversity of the Hawaiian Islands that he and his wife visited
five years ago. There were two original goals on their trip, for their daughters to take part in the Kauai
half marathon and for them to visit Pearl Harbour on the main island of Oahu. Starting of in Kauai, also
known as the Garden Island, we enjoyed images of, and finding out about the ubiquitous feral chicken
population, the ceremonial start to the half marathon, the islands’ infrastructure, homesteads, small
town life, homesteads, the red rocked Waimea Canyon, lush vegetation, plains of crops, exotic flora,
and birdlife. There were images taken on the eastern area of the island with its beaches strewn with
huge driftwood and rocks beneath beautiful cloud formations, including areas used as locations in films
such as South Pacific and Jurassic Park. The island of Oahu and the city of Honolulu came next with an
Av showing its tower blocked cityscapes, street scenes, churches, administrative buildings The Waikiki
beach resort, malls, hotels, night scenes and beaches at sunsets contrasted with Waialua, with its surf
shops, turtles on palm-fringed beaches, inland lakes, streams, canyons and waterfalls.

Then on to Pearl Harbour where Tony provided anecdotes and images of the USS Arizona Memorial,
mooring points and stations, the memorial wall and the Pacific Fleet Submarine memorial. Images of
submarine interiors, the torpedo rooms, control, mess rooms and galley followed. Tony’s travelogue
then took us to Hawaii, the biggest island, via an Av showing its landscape, of turtles on volcanic
rocky shores, of colourful townships, pacific island wood carvings, quirky shops and painted churches.
Then onto its volcanoes; Tony described details of eruptions, providing images of their steep ascent
through barren landscape, and remote controlled monitoring stations and telescopes photographed
above the clouds at sunset. Anecdotes of altitude sickness, walking through lava tubes, desolate
trails through thermal venting steam, were followed by stark images of solid lava on the Chain of
Craters Road which flows to form cliffs and the Holei Sea Arch on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Throughout the evening we enjoyed seeing images of battleships, beaches, cloud formations, high
rise cities, agriculture, culture, indigenous fare and wildlife, providing a comprehensive view of the
Hawaiian Islands. Co Chair Roseanne Robinson thanked Tony for his fascinating presentation after
which, club members were able to view a selection of his monochrome prints over refreshments.
