Club Report, 1st Open Print Competition - Tuesday 18th November 2014.

On Tuesday 18th November 2014, Morpeth Camera Club welcomed Ivor Robinson, former President of the
Hartlepool Photographic and Digital Group, to judge the First Open Print Competition of the season.
As usual there was a varied selection of subjects in both the monochrome and colour sections of the competition
including a detailed marble statue, minimalist street furniture, a street scene with a touch of infra red, Raby Castle
against billowing clouds, glistening roof tiles, textured rocky landscapes, a high key glamour portrait and atmospheric
remembrance day poppies.
Ivor gave constructive comments on positioning, good presentation and cropping and was looking for crisp prints with
detail and contrast, with a full range of tones. Using this criteria he announced the following as his choice of award
winners in the monochrome section -

3. Lacemaker by Vince Rooker.
4. End of the Pier by John Barnes.
5. Paris Reflection by Paul Saint.

Ivor selected four mono prints as Highly Commended - Strength in Depth by Davy Bolam, Scullery Maid and Station
Master by Elaine Illingworth, and Touching Silver by Dave Illingworth.

The Colour section of the competition included a high key image of a surfer on the beach, a conttre-jour image of
woodland, a brightly lit mobile rock café, a beached wreck in the mist, colourful street performers, boat racers on the
Tyne, a detailed still life image of cheese and wine, birdlife, glowing sunsets, the Winter palace in sunlight, wild water
rafters, quirky chimney pots, abstract flowers, light through a stained glass window, autumn leaves and moving
night time traffic. Ivor was looking for sharp, colourful, detailed prints and made the following selections -

Three colour prints also received highly commended awards, Nuyhabn,Copenhagen by Lionel Bryan, Café Rock by Dave
Illingworth and Where did you get that Hat by Steve McDonald.

Ivor was thanked for judging the eighty six prints, giving his time to comment on each one, and for generously offering
helpful advice, interspersed with his own humorous anecdotes throughout the evening.
