Club Meeting, 2nd Open Print Competition - Tuesday 12th March 2024.
On Tuesday 12th March 2024, Morpeth Camera Club held its Second Open Print Competition of the season. Split
into two sections of Monochrome Prints and Colour Prints, the club had invited Peter Maguire ARPS CPAGB EFIAP
BPE1*, to assess our work. A recognised Ncpf judge, Peter is a member of Gosforth Camera and a keen landscape
and natural history photographer.
Peter stated that he had enjoyed looking at both sets of prints, and was impressed by the overall quality of the
entries. This led to him having to make some difficult decisions as the top three prints in each competition had
changed places several times and he had made his final selections this afternoon. Good composition, symmetry,
light, subject matter, viewpoint and choice of paper had all been involved in his decision-making, plus that x-factor
that makes a print standout.
Monochrome Print Section.
Opening with the Monochrome Prints, the judge had been looking for good tonal range across the wide variation
of subject matter entered. Local scenes, Tanfield Railway, the Tyne pedestrian tunnel, statuary, mooring ropes, a
still life, and abstract views had all been well seen and presented but had needed a little extra to make the awards.
Peter selected four prints as Highly Commended; Tram Stop and Derwent Reservoir by Roseanne Robinson, Quietly
Awaiting Resurrection by Davy Bolam, and Warkworth Bay Shower by Paul Appleby.
Moving on to his top five selections, Fifth place went to Old Jetty, Coquet Estuary by Davy Bolam, and in fourth
was Reach for the Sky, Gdynia by Davy Bolam. Third place was Silo Evening by Dave Bisset and in Second place
was Hauxley Beach by Glyn Trueman. In First place and winner of the 2nd Open Monochrome Print Competition
was Out on the Lake by Sue Dawson.

1st. Out on the Lake.                           2nd. Hauxley Beach.                              3rd. Silo Evening.
Colour Print Section.
Continuing with the Colour Print Section of the Competition, Peter again applauded the authors on their choice of
subject matter which included, garden birds, waterfalls, travel images, flowers, triptychs, Tyne quayside and distant
churches, that made interesting viewing. Four prints were selected as Highly Commended, The Yellow Poppy by Sue
Dawson, Macaw Lodge by Paul Appleby, The Journey by Roseanne Robinson & Wild Flowers on Ice by Glyn Trueman.
Announcing his top five in reverse order, Fifth place went to Atheys Dean by David Moore. In Fourth place was Reeds
in a Flooded Mire by Davy Bolam, Third place went to Leaf Structure by Paul Appleby and second place to Gannet
Profile, also by Paul Appleby. In First place and winner of the 2nd Open Colour Print Competition was The Beauty
of Nature by Davy Bolam.

1st. The Beauty of Nature.                       2nd. Gannet Profile.                    3rd. Leaf Structure.
Club Chairman Peter Downs thanked Peter for his honest assessments, encouraging critique, and informative comments
that had made it an enjoyable evening and the top prints were then displayed for closer viewing during refreshments.
