Club Meeting Results of the 1st OPen PDI Competition 13th October 2026

Tuesday October 13th was our first open digital competition of the season and saw 55 entries judged by Geoff Green of Whickham CC. Geoff gave positive and constructive feedback on each image before the final results.

One of the features of the entries was the different skies, from the blue hour at Bamburgh Castle or blue evening sky of Morpeth and Newcastle, to shards of light over Northumberlandia, a Seaton Sluice sunset, and the night sky over a sea of purple

Colour palettes were varied, from the muted colours of seaweed and shell, the beach at Alnmouth or a tranquil landscape, to the colour gradient of a van Gogh inspired pattern or rust tones surrounding a view of tugs. Really vibrant colours characterised one Neighbourhood and were seen in beach huts, St Mary’s Cathedral or a colourful portrait from Asia. Monos were often moody, stormy, or steamy in the case of the train image.

Where nature was represented, the judge had looked for detail in the exposure in the places required, the florets of a flower, wings of a moth or damselflies, the feathers of an egret, curlew or black-legged kittiwake. The timing of waiting to catch the birds grabbing food or the butterflies mating was applauded.

Some images showed excellent leading lines, as with the road at Rothbury, and one guided by a fern leaf, or showed textural variety with peeling paint or an abandoned wall. Unusual views included those of cruise ships, the Ouseburn reflection and The Couple through a glass wave. Visual geometry was also remarked upon - of field walls, slate spoil heaps, a staircase, a grid, and ropes presented on diagonal lines. Story telling was evident in a metal worker at work, 3 men on a bench killling time, horses, sheep in a tyre, and the comic strip of penguins at play.

Geoff announced his 4 Highly commended entries as Karin Jackson’s The Grand Staircase, a symmetrical and geometric mono, a moody scene of Incoming Storm by Peter Downs, the geometrically ordered surroundings of Swaledale Barn by Dave Birch, and the iconic puffin shot of Who Ordered Sushi? by Paul Kidd.

Fifth place went to Sue Dawson’s Brigham Rocks, with a well placed climber giving the composition scale, Fourth was In Need of Repair by Roseanne Robinson, which had rustic and colourful appeal. Peter Down’s Staircase To Nowhere, taking Third place, was an intriguing, dark and moody mono. Second was Glyn Trueman’s Behind a Dragonfly’s Eyes, a symmetrical and delicate rendition where Geoff described the detail as outstanding.

The judge then announced the winner of the First Open Projected Image Competition to be Dave Birch. The shadows and geometric lines of and around the grid in Waiting For Rain made it into an unuusal and almost abstract image. Jeremy Cooper thanked Geoff for his useful comments before refreshments were enjoyed.
