Virtual Meeting, 'Members Evening' - Tuesday 11th May 2021.

On Tuesday 11th May, Morpeth Camera Club continued its virtual meetings with a members night where those
that wish to do so can show examples of their photography. This can be very interesting evening as it gives an
insight into the many different genres they enjoy when not constrained by competition rules or subject matter.

Davy Bolam open the evening with three very different Audio visual presentations, in the first sequence he had
set fifty different images of people in hats, to the well known comic music hall song 'Where Did You Get That Hat?'
which was composed and first performed by Joseph J. Sullivan at Miner's Eighth Avenue Theatre in 1888. In his
second sequence entitled 'Manipulation', we saw original versions of images followed by the same images that had
changed by using different techniques and filters in post production with some surprising and artistic results, set to
a soundtrack that blended with the pictures. His third A.V. was quite different and featured an abandoned derelict
hotel found whilst urban exploring. The images taken in this graffiti laden building with dark rooms and corridors
was set to slow creepy music that enhanced the haunting and uneasy feel of this urban explore.

Pat Wood followed with her images of local scenes all taken whist she enjoyed learning the benefits of using a new
camera. Starting at Bothal we saw images of a derelict building, views of the River Wansbeck and followed a woodland
walk. Moving to Warkworth, Pat had captured images of this beautiful village including the old bridge over the River
Coquet, the Church of St Lawrence, doors and windows on the main street and the Castle that dominates the skyline.
Lemmington Wood, a scenic woodland known for its stone carvings, including cup-&-ring marks & a runic inscription
was the next location. Situated west of Alnwick we saw moss covered dry stone walls, close ups of bark, logging
machinery and an encounter with a forester that manages the wood. Moving on to the coast, sunlit images of
Newbiggin by the Sea, people on the promenade and views of the bay were followed by a short walk around Amble.
New buildings overlooking the marina, shopping pods, fishing boats and harbour views concluded Pats interesting
presentation.

Peter Downs followed with a presentation entitled Photography or Art and explained that he saw his camera as a tool
to record an image and that he then concentrated on the post production of this image to create abstracts or painterly
compositions. Peter believes that he was influenced by an art teacher who asked 'why' rather than 'how' when assessing
pictures. He believes there are no rules and has no problems using filters, photoshop and other photo editing tools to
get an effect that he likes. During his presentation we saw abstract and surreal images that concentrated on shape
and colour as well as test and unfinished images that did not fit any specific category. Peter agreed that not everyone
would like his work and that some images had been produced to get a reaction, or to question the expected normality
of most camera club images.
