                                  3rd Ashington CC
On Sunday 26th November 2023, it was the turn of Ashington Camera Club to host the annual Northern Counties
Photographic Federation 7 Way Interclub PDI Knockout Competition. The seven clubs that make up the Northern
Area Group are expected to take part and in this event, where each club submits twenty digital images. Fifteen
to be shown at any one time, together with five substitutes that may be used at each clubs discretion to either
replace any lower scoring images in the previous round or to benefit from the judges leaning to certain subjects.
These images are all viewed and scored live by a panel of three judges that this year consisted of Alan Porrett
ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP, APAGB, Peter Maguire LRPS, CPAGB, EFIAP, and Stuart Skelsey LRPS, CPAGB, BPE1* who
each gave a mark out of five using an automatic scoring machine which then provided an immediate total for
each projected image.
We were informed that Amble Photo Group and Cambois Camera Club had failed to provide an entry, so the five
clubs in the first round of this years contest were Blyth, Morpeth, Alnwick, Wooler and Ashington. In a high scoring
first round Blyth (194), Morpeth (188), and Ashington (176) were the three highest scoring clubs and progressed
to the 'The Trophy' Final, leaving the two lowest scoring clubs Alnwick (165)and Wooler (161), to compete in 'The
Plate' Competition.
In a closely contested 'Trophy' Final, the lead changed hands between the three clubs as we progressed through
the images before it was announced that the winners of the 2023 Pdi Knockout Trophy were Morpeth with a score
of 190 marks, Blyth were runners up with 185 marks followed by Ashington with 182 marks. In the secondary
'Plate Competition' Alnwick had the edge over Wooler in another good contest.
Big thanks to the Morpeth members who attended to support the club and to those who allowed their images to be
used in the contest. Morpeth's highest-scoring image was Black Capped Tanager by Graham Sorrie which gained 15
out of 15 marks. Morpeth Club Chairman Peter Downs accepted the Siler Plate Trophy on behalf of the club. A big
thank you Ashington for hosting the competition and providing refreshments and a buffet tea which concluded a
good afternoon.
