Club Meeting, Set Subject Print Competition - Tuesday 11th February 2025.
On Tuesday 11th February, Morpeth Camera Club welcomed guest judge Chris Graham from Ashington Camera
Club, who came to comment on the prints and announce the award winners for this season’s Set Subject Print
Competitions. This year's subjects were ’ Solitude ’ in the Monochrome Section, and ‘Reflections’ in the Colour
Section. He opened by defining each subject, stating that he used each definition as a benchmark for following
the brief.
He began with the Monochrome Section of which there were twenty-seven entries. Included were a dark, dingy
jail, a lone turbine, lone figures each on a wintry beach and rocky outcrops, a figure in a half-lit church, a solitary
goat, a skeletal tree, a kestrel, a heron, a figure disappearing in the mist and a solo traveller. Chris offered advice
on cropping, suggested care in post processing and the importance of good mounting before announcing his award
winners.
Highly Commended went to Paul Appleby with Only Turbines for Company and Solitary Kestrel Hunting, to Karin
Jackson for Over the Hills and Far Away and to The Bathing House by Dave Bisset. Fifth Place went to Roseanne
Robinson with Living in Solitude, chosen for its simplicity, Fourth Place to Sue Dawson for Alone in Nature for its
pin sharpness and detail, Third Place went to Peter Downs with Me and the Castle, awarded for good composition.
Second Place went to Glyn Trueman with Solitary Turbine, which the judge said was very well taken. Chris went
on to announce that the winner of the Set Subject Print Monochrome Print Competition was Roseanne Robinson
with Alone with My Thoughts. A child sitting contemplating which the judge said was simple but effective.

1st. Alone with my Thoughts.                 2nd. Solitary Turbine.                         3rd. Me and the Castle.
The judge moved on to the Set Subject Colour Print Section; ‘Reflections.’ This section attracted thirty-five entries
which included reflections of bridges, reeds, the inside of a kaleidoscope, quayside groynes, water birds, a lone
tree; stained glass windows, the Tyne Bridges at sunset, sailing vessels, steel patterns, The Glass House interior,
The Shuttered Bridge, Warkworth Castle, Blyth Quay, sand reflections, a lighthouse abstract, Ouseburn reflections,
and the view inside a water butt. The judge said that when taking photographs of reflections one has to watch out
for balance between the two.
He went on to announce his Highly Commended choices. To Davy Bolam for Inside a Kaleidoscope chosen for its
different interpretation; Roseanne Robinson with Lone Tree for its natural colouration, and Walking on the Beach
for its vivid colours, Sue Dawson with Reflections Abstract also for its different interpretation of the theme. Fifth
Place went to Dave Bisset with The Glasshouse for its lines and gentle curves; Fourth Place went to Martin Goble
with Party Boat for its sharp wheel reflections, Third Place went to Sue Dawson with Narcissu Duck for its great
depth and sharpness. In Second Place was Paul Appleby with Media City, chosen for its clever perspective. The
judge went on to announce that the Winner of the Set Subject colour Print Competition was Glyn Trueman with
Sea Glass on Black Glass which the judge said was simple, very effective and brave.
