Club Meeting Report, 2nd Open PDI Competition - Tuesday 22nd March 2016.
1st
On Tuesday 22nd March 2016, Morpeth Camera Club held their 2nd Open Projected Digital Image Competition of the
season where members had been invited to enter up to three images on any subject matter.  John Thompson ARPS,
EFIAP, CPAGB, President of Alnwick Camera Club had been invited to judge the submissions and after several weeks
studying the fifty five images he had returned to announce his Top Five and four Highly Commended awards.
Commenting on each entry, John offered his views on the elements that come together to make a successful image
for a competition. He suggested that authors ask themselves when producing work what message they were trying
to convey, to then direct the judge to what you want him to see and to explore what should/should not be included
in the final product. He stressed the importance of a point of interest and its position within the frame.
John then proceeded to give examples where by simply cropping an image to a horizontal, square or vertical format
could alter the strength and viewers perception of a picture. John explained the differences between a holiday or a
simple record shot and that by putting your mark or stamp on it can make it a competition shot.
Throughout the evening there were many invaluable hints and tips with regard to light levels, saturation, filters and
post processing. Encouraging the use of software and plug-ins he again advised that adding an effect alone did not
necessarily make a better image, if you did not have a good base to start with. John concluded the evening by
selecting the following images as his Top Five and Highly Commended awards -
1st - Bleak day at the Beach by Chris Earl.
2nd - Gothic Beauty by Davy Bolam.
3rd - Conceptual Landscape, Battlebridge by Davy Bolam.
4th - Contemplation by Brian Morris.
5th - Princess by Gordon Hine.
H/C - Walsingham Window No1 by Lionel Bryan.
H/C - The Wink by Dave Bisset.
H/C - Eclipse by Paul Saint.
H/C - Frosty Petals by Dave Bisset.
Club Chairman Glyn Trueman thanked John for his detailed and informative critique of members images which had
made it an enjoyable evening.
