Summer Walk, Warkworth Reverse - Tuesday 18th June 2019.

Morpeth Camera Club run a programme of informal walks and visits to places of local interest where those that wish
to can practice their photography, exchange tips and ideas and have some exercise. On Tuesday 18th June, a warm
and sunny evening was the perfect start for our walk around the beautiful village of Warkworth.

Leaving the Stanners car park, the group headed to the nearby Norman church dedicated to St Lawrence. Standing
on the site of a previous saxon church, it was built between 1132 and 1140, and was not only a place of worship but
also as a refuge in times of danger. Stained glass windows, statuary, and the ornate Grey family coats of arms were
among the many items photographed before we continued outside to the churchyard and east along the river.

Two bridges cross the River Coquet, the "new bridge" built in 1965 and the "old bridge" built in 1379. This structure
is unique in England as it is the only surviving medieval fortified bridge with a two story gatehouse at its southern
end. Crossing north over one bridge and south over the second bridge, we then headed up bridge Street, past the
market cross and up Castle street. This is a beautiful old street with many fine buildings each with their individual
character and an excellent location for the photographer to find interesting details.

Arriving at the castle, the magnificent medieval fortress was bathed in the evening sunlight and was a very worthy
subject, with many images taken of the keep, outer walls and gatehouse. Our route then took us in a south westerly
direction from the cricket ground above Mill Walk Wood and then north towards Howlett Hall cottages.

A short downhill stretch led us to join the riverside walk opposite The Hermitage, a chapel and priests house built into
a cliff face on the north side of the Coquet. The group then followed the river on a slow wander back to our starting
point to complete our reverse circular walk. A good start to the walks programme and a big thank you to the fourteen
members who attended and made it an enjoyable and pleasant evening.
