Virtual Meeting, 2nd Open Pdi Competition - Tuesday 16th March 2021.
At a virtual meeting on Tuesday 16th March Morpeth Camera Club welcomed photographic judge Kev Hilton from
Hexham & District Photographic Society who commented upon and announced the results of the Second Open Pdi
Competition.
Among the 51 eclectic entries were brooding Newbiggin skies, St Mary’s lighthouse at high tide, colourful moored
fishing boats, silhouetted skeletal trees, Newcastle night scenes, stormy Druridge bay, autumnal forests and snow
laden trees. Warm rays of light through trees, and Dover’s White Cliffs, were followed by still life, abstracts, Goths,
water features, statuary and mining industry installations, an otter feeding, and images of water and shore birds.
Throughout the evening the judge gave his views on correcting burn out in clouds, saturation, exposure, cropping
and the significance of borders around an image.
He went on to announce four Highly Commended awards to, 'Shadow People' by Davy Bolam, a birds eye view of
four people with elongated shadows, which the judge said was interesting and he was attracted by its story telling
quality. 'Walk in the Mist' by Stephanie Robson, beach walkers emerging from a sea mist, admired for its good
tonal depth. 'Wallington Gargoyles' by Paul Appleby for its viewpoint under an ominous sky, and to 'Installation'
by Brian Morris which the judge said was dark and impactful.
In fifth place was 'Curlew Foraging' by Davy Bolam which was described as a good close up of the timid bird and
which had excellent depth of field. Fourth place was given to 'Still life with Orange and Yellow' by Sue Dawson,
the judge saying that it had strong ambient light, good depth of field and had great commercial value. In third
place was 'Concentration' by Alistair Cooper, the judge considered it to be a good shot of two bands people where
the author had captured their great facial expressions. Second place was given to 'No Room for Pilot Error' by
Paul Appleby, an image of a bird approaching its nest which the judge appreciated for its sharpness. The judge
then went on to announce the winner of the Second Open Projected Digital image to be 'Last Light' by John
Willmore, A lone figure walking along the shoreline, the judge described it as a well composed moody abstract
which really worked for him. Club Chairman John Barnes then thanked Kevin for his comments.

1st. Last Light.                       2nd. No Room for Pilot Error.                  3rd. Concentration.
After a short break the audience enjoyed a variety of Audio Visual work, which included a Lithuanian tour by John
Willmore which illustrated the scenery and lifestyle of this little know about country. This followed on with a taster
of the audio visual work produced by Sheila Haycox who will be a guest of the club later this season.
